Nestled in the heart of Holborn and just a short taxi ride from London’s West End, you’ll find the historical area of Hatton Garden. Here you’ll discover one of London’s hidden gems; a place steeped in history and romance since Queen Elizabeth I gifted a house and garden in the grounds of Ely Palace to a handsome courtier in 1576. The land owned by the Bishop of Ely was in a prime location in central London and would have commanded a generous income. However, the Queen was so smitten by the handsome courtier Christopher Hatton, that she fixed his rental at a favourable £10 per annum, plus ten loads of hay… and a rose from the garden at midsummer each year!
In the mid-seventeenth century, the once famous garden was used to create an estate of street named Hatton Garden, housing workshops and warehouses for a variety of local businesses. From machine gun designers to cinema producers, the area soon attracted a collection of gold and platinum jewellers, as well as recognised diamond traders.
By 1870, Hatton garden had established an international reputation as London’s jewellery quarter and the UK’s centre for diamonds. The demand for hand-made fine jewellery and exquisite diamonds increased, as the trend for more extravagant and expensive items of jewellery grew. The specialist jewellers in Hatton Garden became famous for trading diamonds, often shipping rare stones around the World as jewellery became a symbol of not only wealth and stature, but of love and affection.
Today, the romance lives on in Hatton Garden as its stores showcase an impressive collection of sparkling diamond engagement rings, wedding bands and a stunning range of precious stones and hand-made jewellery. Home to nearly 300 local businesses including over 30 individual jewellery shops, Hatton Garden offers the largest collection of jewellery retailers in the country.
One of Hatton Garden’s most prominent retail owners is Jeremy Hartstone who opened his first store, ‘Beverley Hills Jewellers’ in 1987 and still manages his flagship jewellery store, in addition to six other stores all specialising in exquisite diamonds and fine jewellery. Jeremy remains as involved, passionate and committed to the business and his customers now, as he was launched Beverley Hills. His stores have served in excess of a million customers to date – that’s a lot of diamonds and jewellery sold a lot of very happy customers!
